Vet in the Wild

It's all about... a vet in the wild!

If your dog or cat is injured, you give it an extra cuddle and rush to the vet. But what if an African wild dog gets caught in a poacher's trap? Or a little rhino calf is alone on the savannah? Who takes care of them then? In ‘Vet in the Wild’, Dutch vet Maaike takes you on an adventure on the African Savannah. ‘Vet in the Wild’ will be shown weekly on BNNVARA on NPO 3 from Saturday 7 September at 17:55.

Maaike lives among the wild animals on a huge nature reserve in Namibia, that of the Naankuse Foundation. From her safari tent, she sets out daily to help wild animals where she can. She not only shares her special encounters with wild animals, but also shows the challenges and beauties of living and working in Namibia. What sounds does she hear from her tent at night? What is the best way to take shelter from the hot midday sun? And what do you do when it suddenly pours rain and you have nowhere to go?

About Maaike:

Maaike de Schepper (34) was born in Bergschenhoek, just above Rotterdam. She knew very early on that she wanted to become a veterinarian in Africa. After earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in veterinary medicine in Belgium, she pursued her dream and left for Namibia with her diplomas in her pocket. Maaike: ‘When I was 8 years old, I already knew I wanted to become a veterinarian in Africa to work with elephants, rhinos, lions and all other animals. Every day, together with the team at Naankuse, I dedicate myself to all animals, big and small. To treat sick animals, give them a better home, or fight against poaching. In the morning, I often don't yet know what's in store for me, which means every day is a different adventure. And now I can share this adventure with you all, which of course is super cool!’

In the first episode, Maaike immediately has an exciting job ahead of her: she has to track down a lion and then sedate it so that the animal can be given an tracking collar. This is needed to protect the animal from poachers. Maaike also treats a meerkat with an inflamed leg and gets a new patient in her clinic: a very young warthog found alone in the wild.

In episode 2, Maaike is called by a farmer living in the area: he has caught a cheetah that wanted to attack his cows. It is up to Maaike to solve this. And a tiny oryx, a small antelope, is brought into her clinic. The animal has an injured leg. Maaike makes sure it recovers.

Vet in the Wild is a co-production of BNNVARA and WildLane.
